Hi there! My name is Sarah Koppelkam, and I’m so excited to be entering my third year teaching 9th and 11th grade English at Woods. My past experience in private education and small schools has proved to me that small, tight-knit communities like Woods are the place to be. I am a New England transplant, born and raised in New Hampshire, with bachelor's degrees in English Literature and Painting from Wesleyan University in Connecticut. I’ve been in North Carolina for just over two years, where I’ve already fully integrated “ya’ll” into my vernacular. Before coming to Woods, I taught part time at Carolina Friends School in Durham and spent some time teaching at St. Paul’s School in New Hampshire, where I still spend my summer as one of the Assistant Directors for the Advanced Studies Program.

Teaching, in my mind, is the most engaging, fun, and challenging job there is. As teachers, we have the opportunity to learn a great deal every single day. We get to learn from books, from daily mistakes, and from awesome 16-year-olds. In my own teaching practice, I have a passion for helping high school students to be brave with their voices, and so far I have been blown away by the incredible teenagers I get to work with at Woods. I'm so grateful for this community!

I'd love to meet you. Stop by room 215 or contact me at, and check out what we are doing at my classroom instagram page, @koppelkamsclassroom!
