Silent Sustained Reading

S.S.R. Expectations & Book Reviews

ENGLISH I, II, III & IV

200 points/trimester

EXPECTATIONS

1. During our in-class reading time, you may read any book that you haven’t read before. It must be a chapter book. Your literature textbook/novel we are reading as a class may not be used as an S.S.R. book. Honors books can also be SSR books.

2. I expect the books to be appropriate for your age and reading ability. If I question your choice of a book, I may ask for a note from your parents.

3. Get your book from any source – our class library, the public library, your home, the digital library or borrowed from a friend. Here's a list of resources that you can use to find books. Some people actually go to bookstores and buy their books. No, really. Talk to me about your e-reader (Kindles, Nooks, iPads, etc.) and we’ll come to an agreement.

4.  Trimester book talks on your S.S.R. reading will count for 100 points. To receive the full 100 points, 9th and 10th graders must successfully report on 250 pages and 11th and 12th graders must successfully report on 475 pages per trimester. It is the total number of pages you read that will determine your grade, not the number of books. If you read more than the required number of pages in the trimester, the extra will carry over to the next trimester.

5. Reading will take place regularly in class, but you will need to read outside of class time to meet the 250 or 475 page goal. You will earn points for in-class reading time. Again, books read as a class will not count toward your goal.

6. After you finish the book, you are to write a GoodReads book review. Your review must be thoughtful, well written and truly reflect your thoughts and reactions. Your book review will be due toward the end of the trimester. Deadlines will be announced in class or on Google Classroom.

  • Prompts for the weekly updates  are provided here.

  • The assignment sheet for the GoodReads reviews is here.

9th-12th GRADING SCALE FOR GOODREADS BOOK UPDATES

Each trimester you will complete approximately 10 book updates for 5 points. These updates will total to 50 points by the end of the trimester.

9th-12th GRADING SCALE FOR GOODREADS BOOK REVIEW

50 points // 1 book review
0 points // no book review

7. Feel free to complete the book review early. As soon as you finish a book, begin your review and get it done. If you delay and wait until the deadline, you’ll likely forget details.

8. You may take notes while you read and use those notes to write your book review. Post-It notes work especially well.

9. I will keep track of your book(s) and review(s) via Goodreads. You may ask to look at your book log anytime.
