Middle School Athletic Director

Bryan Matthews came to Woods Charter School in 2008 as the middle school health and physical education teacher. He was the first middle school athletics director, starting the program in 2011 with boys and girls soccer, and boys and girls basketball. The following year, the program joined the Central Carolina Middle School Conference and added boys and girls cross country, volleyball, and cheerleading. Finally, in 2016, baseball joined as well. More than 50% of eligible middle school students participate in the athletics program each year. Sportsmanship has been a consistent trademark. In addition to numerous runner-up awards for both soccer and cross country, the program boasts four conference championships since it began conference play in 2012.

Matthews currently coaches the middle school boys basketball team, is primarily responsible for game day management for boys and girls soccer, monitoring student-athletes' well-being, and for hiring, mentoring, and supervising coaches. He coached the varsity women’s basketball program for 4 years, and was the first middle school girls’ basketball coach.

Originally from London, Ohio, Matthews is a University of Kansas graduate, earned a master’s degree from Ball State University (IN) and a teaching certification at Brockport State College (NY). He and his wife, Alecia, have two children, Jana and James, who both attend Woods. They reside in Holly Springs.
