What good fortune came my way in 2012, when I was asked to join the Woods Charter faculty!
The Woods Way is unique to North Carolina, and unique to the world of education in general. It is easy to embrace the philosophy and mission of such a terrific school. The Arts are "lifted up" and encouraged in the Woods environment, and the rewards of teaching are increased a thousand-fold when such an environment exists.
I believe an artist has the potential to do even more than beautify or embellish the world; the artist is a conduit ~ a messenger ~ for what is going on in myriad dimensions of life --- sometimes guiding, sometimes documenting, and (hopefully) often reminding us of the more significant questions in life. For me, art is a philosophy, and a segue into higher realms of thought.
In all of my classes, we will delve into these bigger questions. We will have meaningful conversations about how art applies to contemporary life; we will also view history, social and political events, language, science and math through the lens of art, and hopefully this will facilitate a type of learning which will be comprehensive and dimensional.
Of course, we will continue on the visual path which has been well-established in elementary school arts here at Woods; we will practice and enhance technique, and grow our knowledge of drawing, painting, sculpture and 3-D, among other media. We will learn more about architecture, textiles, and photography, and Art History will be a component of our studies throughout every middle and high school class.
On a personal note, I am a painter, writer, decorator, mother, and former curator. My primary mediums are oil, pastel and acrylic, and generally I work in a large-scale, abstract fashion. I have a BFA in painting with a minor in Art History from Wright State University in Ohio, and an MFA in Creative Writing from American University in Washington DC. For many years, I was a curator of contemporary art, and associate director of a contemporary museum, during which time I was also the education coordinator. I have taught university classes in art appreciation and art history, and worked in the public school environment in Virginia while living in the DC and Alexandria vicinities. I have a passion for my children and family, for classical, alternative, and nearly every kind of music, as well as for literature, poetry, dance, the natural world, animals, and (of course) my students! My strongest wish is (to paraphrase Mahatma Gandhi) "to be the example you wish to see in the world."
I wholeheartedly believe that expressive and artistic potential exists in every single person I have ever met, and I look forward to witnessing and facilitating the unfolding of each student's creative gift! Room 241 promises to provide an uplifting atmosphere of inspiration, imagination, research, technique, and discovery!
