Hello all, my name is Leonard McNair and I will be starting my first year on staff at Woods Charter as Middle School PE Teacher and Heads Men’s Varsity Basketball Coach. As an alumni of Woods Charter with the Class of 2015, I am excited to return and contribute to a place where I was equipped with opportunities and knowledge to take on the world. Upon graduation from Woods Charter I went on to attend Guilford College in Greensboro, NC, where I majored in Business Administration with minor in Psychology and Money & Finance. During my time at Guilford College, I was a member of the Men's Basketball team from 2015-2018 and a student assistant coach in the 2018-2019 season. Additionally I was a Bonner Scholar, a scholarship program focused on Volunteer Service and diving deep into such with purpose and direction. In this program I became enamored with mentoring serving as a Site Director for Movement of Youth (a program that pairs minority college students with minority high school students in the area to provide them with a role model as well as someone to lean on) I also developed what became Tranquil Ambitions LLC., during these years, which is a film exposure and mentoring company that connects young athletes with opportunities to further their career and receive guidance on how to navigate this space. After graduation it was safe to say one thing, I didn’t 100% know where and in what capacity but I wanted to devote myself to my purpose of mentorship.

Through life I was guided by an abundance of phenomenal mentors. On the other hand I stumbled upon a lot of mistakes in my life. Through combining these experiences I have found a very unique and adaptable approach to reaching and being able to serve as someone youth can trust. The opportunity to serve in this capacity at Woods Charter came to me on a very special day in April.

After serving 2 years at the high school level as a basketball coach and mentor at Page High School in Greensboro, I went on to serve as an Assistant Basketball Coach at Catawba Valley Community College in Hickory, NC. While the relationships built and opportunity to learn in such a great space will last me a lifetime, I found that the amount of pure mentorship and connection with youth was significantly less at this level. Dealing with a lot of administrative tasks and closer association with the business of managing youth opposed to the hands on component didn’t feel authentic. I shared this in a lot of conversations with our HS Athletic Director Dena Floyd, who has served as a great mentor for me since we met my senior year at Woods Charter. I spoke on the obvious benefits and experience I was gaining but still feeling that piece was missing. As the year progressed I was blessed with an opportunity to return to Woods to speak for MLK Day and lead activities for the students to participate in and draw from. I felt right back at home, the gut feeling when I came in now 100% makes sense. Now fast forward to this past April/ May leaving a very enriching practice at Catawba Valley, I received a call to interview for the Head Men’s Basketball Position and a few incoming vacancies within the school to serve. I am extremely blessed to have the opportunity to extend my mentorship as Middle School Physical Education Teacher and to join such a great staff.
