Our 2011-2012 school year is off to a great start! With over 500 enthusiastic scholars, 67 faculty and staff, and over 370 families embarking together on a new year of learning, sharing, working, and playing, there have been lots of smiles and buoyant good cheer at Woods this past week. Our school board gathered in The Glade last Thursday night to kick off the year, following a Board Retreat on August 20th conducted by Executive Services Corps of the Triangle.

The WCS Handbook has been revised and updated. Check it out - especially attendance procedures, dress code, and traffic patterns in front of the school. We're "raising the bar" in these areas. Thanks to everyone for their cooperation.

Special thanks to the Woods Charter School Foundation (Donald Beeson, President, and Lisa MacKenzie, Advancement Coordinator) for their ongoing sponsorship of WoodsRock III. This annual event on the last Saturday in August was moved indoors thanks to Hurricane Irene. Over 425 people braved the inclement weather and were rewarded with an eclectic blend of soft rock, student rock, faculty rock, indie, classic, reggae, folk, Latin, Afro-Cuban, alt-pop - you name it. The crowd peaked around noon with great food from Kerala Curry, Little Dippers, Bella Donna, and Barneys, and musical entertainment from the Faculty All-Stars. I was serenaded with a stirring rendition of "Knocking on Harrell's Door". Kudos to the Planning Committee (Ann Kaiyala, Lil Orlandi, John Rice, Carmen Laethem, Diane Pons, Julie Cummins, Anna Thrower, Cindy Darden, Matthew Vooris), our emcees (Seth Herschthal, David Jester, Janet Place, and David Quick), as well as our vendors, activity organizers (Sherry Penland, Emily Anderson, Deb Kozlowski), and our sponsors (WCS Foundation, Chapel Hill Tire, Carr Amps, Don Williams Basketball, and Luna Guitars). WoodsRock IV arrives on August 25, 2012 ! Be there or be square!
