Suzanne Sikes

Although I am new to the Woods community this year (2011-2012), I am not new to science. I am thrilled to be able to share my enthusiasm for science with students here at Woods. At the same time, I am eager to learn more about "the Woods way" from colleagues, students, and parents.

I earned my B.S. from Davidson College and PhD from Vanderbilt University. As a former scientist, I have studied the human brain, learning and memory, and neurodegenerative processes. At Duke, I enjoyed teaching and mentoring high school students to complete research projects in Pharmacology and I enjoyed writing curricula for high school students as part of the Duke Center for Science Education.  I was able to transition to a career in teaching with a Noyce Fellowship from the National Science Foundation and subsequently earned an MAT from Duke University in 2010. I have most recently been teaching in Durham and Wake County Public School Systems.

I have a continued interest in fostering research and writing skills to prepare students for 21st century careers in science. My other interests and hobbies include outdoor recreation, local music, and ACC basketball!
