Student Achievements

2010-2011

Science Olympiad

Our 18 HS students did remarkably well for our first full HS team, medaling in 9 out of the 23 events. We came very close to a 5th place and the opportunity to participate in the State Tournament.   Two teams claimed 1ST place medals. These winning teams in the Helicopter Duration and Mission Possible events will be invited to the State Tournament in Raleigh in April and have the chance to win a $2500 Scholarship.   Out of a total of 29 teams our HS team also took 2ND place in Mousetrap Vehicle, 3RD in Bottle Rocket, Mystery Architecture, Storm the Castle and Tower Building, and 5TH in Fossils and Optics.
The 13 members of our MS JV team did equally well. They won 1ST place in Crime Busters out of the 15 Varsity and Jr. Varsity teams that competed in this division. By also taking five 2ND place medals in Bottle Rocket, Helicopter Duration, Meteorology, Road Scholar and Storm the Castle they placed in the top 2 in 6 of the 10 events they entered.

The MS Varsity team entered all 23 events and medaled in 8 of them scoring high enough in the remaining events to earn the right to bring home the 3RD place team trophy and an invite to the State Tournament in Raleigh in April.   Medals included two 3RD places for Awesome Aquifers and Storm the Castle, three 2ND place medals for Bottle Rocket, Crime Busters and Shock Value and three 1ST places for Dynamic Planet, Helicopter Duration, and Microbe Mission.

Envirothon State Competition

Two Woods Envirothon Teams had a great time at their first state competition! It was a treat to spend a couple of spring days at beautiful Cedarock Park in Alamance County. The training day on Friday went well with team members and alternates getting last minute information for the competition on Saturday. Woods Teams finished seventh and tenth overall out of a field of over 50. Our 7th place team, The Woods 7/8s (Scott Barnes, Chris Hyde, Elliott Pearce, Chris Ward, and Joseph Webster) also tied for first place in Current Environmental Issues. Our 10th place team, The Xenon Wolves (Jessica Canton, Rachel Deininger, Mattison Frances, Henry Lindbo, and Lora Sipal) tied for 3rd place in Soils. The competition was indeed tough with the Woods Teams competing against more experienced teams; however they still enjoyed the event and learned a lot. They will be more experienced and ready for the challenge next year.

Please congratulate the team members when you see them for all their hard work and for representing Woods Charter as a premier academic school.

Science Olympiad Success

At Raleigh Charter High School the Woods Charter Division A Science Olympiad Team made an impressive first showing at the Elementary Competition by earning medals in 8 out of the 13 events they entered.

In a field of 9 teams our small team of 11 claimed 1st place medals in Body Systems, Can You Weather The Weather, Describe It - Build It and Time Machine. They also took 3rd place in Pasta Tower, a 4th in Glider and 5th place in Hot!, Hot!, Hot! and Short Circuits

With a great deal of pride we offer our congratulations and appreciation to Ally Bell, John Farrell, Joshua Goetz, Kevin Johnson, Emery Laethem, Logan Perschy, Kaitlyn Phillips, April Sharp, Melina Spencer, Tina Stewart, and Kaylee Tugwell for their successes and great representation of Woods Charter School.

None of this would have been possible without the dedication of volunteers to coach and administer this event. Our congratulations and appreciation to those who took on this challenge, Heather Gallagher, Melissa Green, Karen Goetz, Carmen Laethem, John Perschy, Phoebe Shih and Nicolle Stewart.

Our thanks to Kairys Properties, Science Olympiad sponsors, for making it possible for our students to have team shirts and a Woods Charter School Science Olympiad Team banner, which our team proudly held high while respectfully cheering during the awards ceremony. Also, thanks to Rick Tugwell for securing our sponsor.

Thanks again to all the students, coaches, faculty, administration and parents for their dedication, hard work and time.

________

At NC State the Woods Charter Middle School Division B Science Olympiad Team made it known that we are still contenders at the State level despite some minor setbacks. We medaled in 3 of the 23 events and 19th overall against a field of 47 teams.

Our MS team, which turned out to be short one individual, claimed 5th place in Road Scholar, a 2nd in Egg-O-Naut, despite some surprises during rocket setup and a 3rd in Wright Stuff missing second place by only 2 seconds using the backup plane. Unfortunately the primary plane was damaged during an attempt to recover it from the ceiling at Reynolds Coliseum following a test flight just prior to the event.

If you recall our High School team left February's regional tournament in Greensboro as First Place Overall Winners in three events, which entitled those students to participate in the Division C State competition. They quickly repeated that success at the state tournament against 48 contenders by once again capturing 1st place in Egg-O-Naut and Flying Bird. Upon some post tournament inquiries buy coach Stewart Campbell regarding scores for Mission Possible it was determined that we in fact also took 1st place in that event. Three for three, and should they apply and get accepted to NC State they have each earned a $2500 scholarship!

With a great deal of pride we offer our congratulations and appreciation to our Middle School team of Matthew Campbell, Tierney Daw, Claire Day, Matthew Deininger, Elizabeth Essen, Martha Farrell, Theresa Farrell, Emma Hayes, Tommy Holden, Danny Johnston, Matthew Kornberg, Sean Nadasky, Diana Royer, Joseph Sharp, Jordan Tavana, Jordan VanHoy, and Nick VanHoy. Kudos also to our High School team, Bryan Campbell, Devon Harris, Kyle Perschy and Daniel Royer, for their successes and great representation of The Woods Charter School.

None of this would have been possible without the dedication of volunteers to coach and administer this event. Our congratulations and appreciation to those who took on this challenge, Stewart Campbell, Joe Canton, Allison Crutchfield, Deborah Day, Heather Gallagher, Tracy Heenan, Nancy Holden, David Lindbo, Megan Lynch, John Perschy, Susan Peterman, Joan Royer, Tiersa Tavana, Ann Toohey, and Mike and Robin VanHoy.

Our thanks to, Kairys Properties, Science Olympiad sponsors, for making it possible for our students to have team shirts and a Woods Charter School Science Olympiad Team banner, which our team proudly held high during the parade of schools at the Opening Ceremony. Also, thanks to Rick Tugwell for securing our sponsor.

Thanks again to all the students, coaches, faculty, administration and parents for their dedication, hard work and time.

YLA

As many of you may know, 23 of our high school students attended the Youth Legislative Assembly in Raleigh this weekend. This is an important educational opportunity for our students as they experience firsthand the legislative process of the NC General Assembly. The students spent Friday, Saturday, and Sunday reviewing, debating, and voting on bills dealing with pressing and controversial issues in North Carolina, such as health care reform and education policies. One of our seniors, Alston Neville was selected to serve as co-chair of the Substance Abuse Committee. He, along with his fellow co-chair, was given the task of drafting and presenting their bill. This is a prestigious position, as there are only 10 bills presented to the delegation of over 250 students. In addition, three of our high school student delegates received the Jimmy Gibbs Award in recognition of their outstanding achievements and contributions to the legislative process in their respective committees. Their achievements are as follows: (only one delegate was selected from each of the 10 committees)

Nicholas Krenitsky, 10th grade - for a bill in the category of Science & Technology
