Middle School

Many of us remember (and some choose to forget!) the trials and tribulations of our lives as Middle School students. It is a time filled both with tremendous growth (physically, mentally, and emotionally) and monumental challenges. A time when students are becoming more self-aware, more academically motivated, but also more frustrated with the limitations of their own world: from relationships with parents and teachers, to navigating the complexities of friendships. This is a wonderful time, filled with energy and opportunity, but also a fearful time of mistakes and insecurities.

As a school, we seek to provide the framework in which our students can grow and mature positively. Students need a safe environment, both at home and at school, in order to develop good organizational routines, a solid sense of self, the ability communicate effectively with peers and adults, and a forward momentum which will carry them on to High School feeling confident and prepared.

We do this through our small community where every student is known by name and students are encouraged to take ownership of their learning. Our teachers are here because they love working with students and they want to support every individual along his or her path to success. We foster a caring community where the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.

We aim to challenge our students effectively, by following a creative but grounded curriculum based on the Core Knowledge framework. We support each learner in a way that maximizes his or her chance for success, and nurture a culture that is both rigorous and stimulating.

Developing a school community is always a work in progress, and we welcome your input in furthering our mission as a place where long-term relationships between students, teachers and parents enhance the learning process.

Matthew Etherington
Middle School Director
