After an initial rebuilding year, his teams have gone 12-7 (3rd place CCAL finish), and 9-10 during the past two seasons. During his tenure, Coach Matthews has taken great pride in teaching his players the fundamentals necessary to become effective basketball players, as well as the team strategies for putting his girls in the best possible situation to compete.
Prior to his arrival at Woods Charter, Matthews coached on several levels of basketball and learned from some of the nation's best coaches. A coach since 1994, he took his first interscholastic position as an intern assistant coach at Lawrence Free State HS (KS) in 1998-99, learning from a 6A state championship coach. Next, Matthews would serve under NCAA Division 1 National Coach of the Year and and National Champion while interning at Ball State University. Following that stint, he spent the next two seasons under the tuteledge of an NAIA Hall of Famer and the current Gardner-Webb head coach at Taylor University (IN) as a graduate assistant coach.
In his first head coaching job, Matthews mentored the freshmen girls basketball team at the famed Muncie Central High School (IN), leading the squad to a winning record. While in Rochester, NY Coach Matthews led his U15 AAU boys team to an Empire Dragons Silver Bracket Title, and learned under a brilliant tactician while serving as Victor 8th grade girls assistant, and enjoyed a perfect season.
In addition to these experiences, Coach Matthews has coached hundreds of players from across the country! His camp resume includes: UNC, KU, Ohio State, Dayton, Wright State, Missouri-KC, Missouri Western All-Stars, Taylor, Houghton, and Rochester. Locally Matthews has teamed with the highly successful WCS boys coach, John Berry, to deliver the NABC Skills Champ Clinic and Youth Hoops Clinics and Camps.
Coach Matthews currently resides in Apex with his wife Alecia, and their two children, Jana and James. He graduated Summa Cum Laude from Brockport State College, has a bachelors degree from the University of Kansas, and a graduate degree in sports management from Ball State University.
