Student Promotion/Retention

Dear Parents

With the end of year fast approaching, the North Carolina End of Grade and End of Course Examinations are getting nearer. While Woods does not believe that we should teach to the test or excessively stress our students about examinations, there will be an appropriate amount of test preparation.

Below is an excerpt from the school handbook regarding the promotion policy.

*From School Handbook 2007-2008 (Page 14)*

*3. Promotion Policy

*For students to be promoted in grades 1 through 8 they must pass four subjects, two of which must be language arts and math. Students in Grades 3, 5, and 8 must score a Level III on their End of Grade Examinations in order to be promoted.

* To be promoted from grade 9 to grade 10, a student must have earned at least five units of credit, including English I and Algebra I.

* To be promoted from grade 10 to grade 11, a student must have earned at least eleven units of credit, including English II and Geometry.

* To be promoted from grade 11 to grade 12, a student must have earned at least seventeen units of credit, including English III and Algebra II.

* Students who are in danger of failing a class must arrange for tutoring. Parents will be contacted if their child is in danger of failing a class, and it will be the parents’ responsibility to secure summer school for their child.

If a student must repeat a grade, he/she must repeat ALL courses in that grade, which may include ones they have previously passed.

If a child does not meet the promotion requirements for elementary or middle school, a parent can make an appeal to the administration to consider promoting the child. Mitigating circumstances would include how near the child is to grade level and social implications.

Regards

Simon King Principal
