Homework Policy

5th Grade Homework Policy

After school it is essential that children have time to be with family, play outside, participate in sports, and just have fun. In the spirit of these beliefs, it is our goal to keep homework to a minimum. They should spend no more than 90 minutes on homework per day. If your child has a difficult time with an assignment please send us a quick email so we can address it the next day. (As tempting as it is, we know because we also have children, simply supplying the answers for them is of no benefit to the child.)

If content (specific subject) reading is not assigned, students are expected to spend an average of thirty minutes reading outside of school every day. Reading consists of reading independently, being read to, or reading aloud to someone. Reading is vital to a child’s academic success and helps develop comprehension skills, vocabulary, spelling, grammar, and writing skills. Reading is the single most important thing you can have your child do to help them succeed in school.

Following an excused absence, homework will be accepted late without penalty. Otherwise, 10 points will be deducted for each day the assignment is late. We believe that it is important to complete and turn in assignments so the student has the opportunity to learn and practice material even if it’s for partial credit.

Throughout the year, various projects will be assigned that correlate to our units of study. In these instances, the regular homework assignments will be modified to avoid an overload.

Other than projects, make up work, or class work they are behind on, homework will not be assigned over the weekend. (Of course, students should read EVERY day.)
