What is the Capital Campaign?

Why is there a Woods Charter School Foundation?

The Woods Charter School Board of Directors contracted with a professional fundraising company to come in and teach us the fundamentals of fundraising. A number of community members were asked to serve on a Planning Committee to learn how to raise funds needed to outfit the Woods new building. It became clear that it would be best to establish a Foundation to act as a conduit for Woods to raise the needed funds. The Planning Committee members learned that many businesses, philanthropists, as well as individuals prefer to donate to a Foundation as opposed to a public entity. In addition, with a foundation established there is no intermingling of funds from a general school budget and the donated monies.

The School Board gave approval to the Planning Committee to establish the Woods Charter School Foundation, Inc, a 501(C) 3 non-profit organization and raise money on behalf of Woods. The Foundation was registered with the Secretary of State on March 28, 2007.

Woods administration or staff will write simple grant proposals for funds for specific items needed for the building then submit to the Foundation. The Foundation Board will review each grant proposal. After the review process, the Foundation Board will make a decision to approve or disapprove the proposal. If approved, the funds needed will be given to WCS. Under the Non-profit status, the Foundation is legally responsible and obligated to ascertain that the funds awarded to Woods are used for the purpose the grant was written.
