English III

Course Overview: This course explores important works of American Literature with the hope that this exploration will deepen the students’ understanding of American culture.

Some of the major goals of this course:

  • To help students gain a better understanding of the literary themes that have been important to American art and culture.
  • To gain a better understanding of how writing can deepen, expand, and refine thinking.
  • To draw original interpretations of literary texts that are both valuable and defensible.
  • To develop sophistication in the ways these interpretations are shared with others.
  • To expand knowledge of literary terms, vocabulary, and grammar.

Other goals that are vital to the course are described in the NC Standard Course of Study.
