·         Students will seek help when needed.

Class Reading Requirements: Students are required to read 36 books independently across several genres throughout the year.  Additionally, students will maintain a Reader’s Response Notebook based on the books they’re reading. Twenty minutes will be devoted to independent reading in class at least four days a week. This time will also be used for conferencing one-on-one with students. Research studies have proven time and time again that no single student literacy activity has a more positive effect on students’ comprehension, vocabulary, spelling, writing, and overall academic achievement than free voluntary reading. Just as kids must practice musical instruments or their favorite sport daily to become competent, so it is with reading. We make time for what we value.  Why 36 books? By setting the requirements at 36, I am ensured that students have a book going constantly.

Final Grade will be based on these four components:

                Independent Reading & Reader’s Response Notebook                   30%

                Writing (journals & essays)                                                                  30%

                Class work                                                                                                  20%

                Class Behavior & Participation                                                               20%
