There is hardly a more exciting place on Earth than the Elementary Art classroom!
The basis for the Arts curriculum is the Core Knowledge Sequence (more details at www.coreknowledge.org). Not only do we learn about the building blocks of Art in class- elements including Line, Shape, Form, Space, Light, Texture, and Color; we use Art time to reinforce subjects encountered in the home classroom. For example the discussion of Maps in Social studies will lead us into a unit on Cartography in Art; if flags are the topic we will delve into Vexilology-the study of the design of Flags. Geometry can be reinforced by cut paper collage or Origami. Every year we balance studio time with time devoted to Art History. We also avail ourselves of the outside world and field trips too.
If you have any questions regarding class or your child's progress please see me! Grading is done on a Commendable, Satisfactory, Needs Improvement basis. Please don't worry about drawing ability.Your child will be exposed to many media and techniques: crayon, oil pastels, pastels, acrylics, watercolor, weaving, ceramics, pencil, printmaking, markers, and much more! In my classroom everyone's an artist. We're here to learn so much more than drawing and it's my job and my passion to convey the wonder and strengths that Art can bring to each individual.
We'd love for you to join us! There are volunteer opportunities in the classroom, as field trip chaperones, doing preparation for class, helping at Winterwoods The Holiday Fair), and Art in the Woods, our year end show.
