I have had the privilege of being an art teacher at Woods Charter School since 2001. During this academic school year (2009-2010) I will be teaching grades 6- 12. Grades 6,7, and 8 will be taking Art History and grades 10, 11, and 12 will be in Visual Arts. My art curriculum follows the North Carolina Standard Course of Study and is supplemented with Core Knowledge. It is my belief that art is a subject of tremendous value to a school's curriculum. Art facilitates and fosters abilities within the student that may not have an outlet in other subject area. Art also allows students to demonstrate their individuality through creative expression. Art helps students communicate with people around them in a nonverbal manner. Students learn that their ideas can be conveyed through the use of symbolism and image. Art enriches the imagination of the students and provides them with valuable insight and information about many different cultures.
In my art class, I hope to develop a student who is knowledgeable, thoughtful, and technically skilled in creating art. Further, I believe that the skills gained from the art curriculum at the Woods Charter School combined with all other academic areas of study will encourage the student to be a more involved member of the community. I'm looking forward to working with these incredibly talented students again this year.
