Welcome back, middle school students!
I hope everyone has had a fantastic, relaxing summer. Now, it is time to jump into another exciting school year!
This year, I will be teaching 7th and 8th grade social studies. I am super excited about the curriculum in each of the classes, as I will be working closely with the rest of the middle school staff to make connections to other content areas, especially English. You can find a general overview of each course as well as classroom expectations on the right side of this page.
I am also an 8th grade advisor this year, along with Ms. Younger and Mr. Herschthal. I'm looking forward to working with the students that I've taught, advised, and interacted with during the last two years; 8th grade is a challenging year, but one that is also full of fun times and valuable experiences. We hope that our new approach to advisory will be one that fosters growth & leadership among our 8th graders.
The support I have received in the past from parents & guardians has been tremendous. I'm so grateful to be working with you all! Some parents in the past have been eager to participate in the classroom as guest speakers. If, after looking at the course outlines, you find a topic in which you are an expert or have had personal experience with and would like to share your insights with the students, I would love to have you come in as a guest speaker. Please contact me if you have any interest in this!
I graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill with a B.A. in history and an M.A. in teaching. As most of you already know, I am a huge UNC basketball fan and enjoy watching college football and basketball. I spent much of the summer in St. Louis, Missouri, studying the impact of jazz and Motown on American culture in a program through the National Endowment for the Humanities. It was quite an interesting experience being a student once again, and I cannot wait to share what I have learned with my students in our Civil Rights Movement unit. I am greatly anticipating your return to Woods and know that this is going to be a fantastic year for all of us!
