5th Grade Mathematics – Course 1

This class utilizes the Glencoe Mathematics: Application and Concept Course 1 book. We will use this textbook for class room exercises and homework assignments, along with supplemental enrichment materials. Class content meets the CORE Knowledge Curriculum and aligns with the North Carolina Standard Course of Study. All middle school students are required to take an end of grade (EOG) math test.

            Chapter 7 – Multiplying and Dividing Fractions

Unit 4     -Algebra

            Chapter 8 – Algebra:  Integers

            Chapter 9 – Algebra: Solving Equations

Unit 5     -Ratio and Proportion

            Chapter 10 – Ratio, Proportion, and Percent

            Chapter 11 – Probability

        Unit 6           -Measurement and Geometry

            Chapter 12 – Measurement

            Chapter 13 – Geometry: Angles and Polygons

            Chapter 14 – Geometry: Measuring Area and Volume

Year Review

 Supplies to bring to class on a daily basis:

1.     Glencoe Textbook (assigned in class)

Supplies to keep at home:

1.     Ruler (with inches and centimeters)

2.     Compass

3.     Protractor

 

Homework Policy

Homework will be assigned most nights.  Homework assignments allow students to practice and master new math concepts- building on classroom instruction.   Homework will be graded based on completeness and effort.

            Following an excused absence, homework will be accepted late without penalty; otherwise, 10 points will be deducted for each day the assignment is late. We believe that it is important to complete and turn in assignments so the student has the opportunity to learn and practice material even if it’s for partial credit.

 

Grading Policy 

The yearly grade will reflect the average of the 3 trimester grades.  

The trimester grade consist of the following.            

    40% - Tests

    20% - Quizes/ mini-projects

     20% - Class work (rubric) 

    10% - Participation

     10% - Homework

    

*A student may make up any work missed due to an excused absence.  When absent, it is the student’s responsibility to find out what work was missed.  Make-up work should be completed in a timely manner.
