Homework Policy
I believe that students should read each and every night in order to broaden their knowledge base, improve their reading fluency, increase their vocabulary, and expose them to both old and new ideas. Reading by oneself silently and outloud to or with a parent and/or sibling are both extremely beneficial and necessary to improve one's reading skills. Reading each night will be a major component of homework this year, and for the most part, the student will be able to choose his/her own reading material at home.
The students will also practice their addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division facts at home. While math homework may be sent home that is related to the concept that we have covered in class that day, a big portion of the math homework for the year will be practicing math facts so that the students know them with automaticity and can apply them throughout the year with ease.
Some Science or Social Studies homework may be assigned but very infrequently. I do not believe in giving the students "busy work" and do not intend for them to do more than 30 minutes of homework each night, not including reading.
If your child is having difficulty completing homework in a reasonable amount of time, please set up a time to conference with me about it so that we can discuss this matter in person.
